To make matters even worse, they even launched the website with preorders for the PC version listed as “Steam”. Unfortunately, those warm fuzzies couldn’t carry me to the end of the month, as during the big Sonic the Hedgehog 30 th anniversary stream, Sega confirmed the existence of Sonic Colors: Ultimate, a remaster of the classic Wii title for PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One and PC… as an Epic Games Store exclusive. Though honestly, the fact that absolutely no one seemed to know about this issue with the PC version until it finally came out on Steam helped warm the deep, dark core of my heart just a smidge.
And the very next day, SNK announced that the 2019 Samurai Shodown revival would finally be coming to Steam on June 14 th… only for Steam owners to discover that the PC version had been saddled with always-online DRM upon its release on the storefront, which SNK patched out soon after. Also on May 15 th, PLAYISM announced that GNOSIA would be coming to PC sometime in 2021 – which I found a little surprising that a PC port wasn’t announced alongside the Switch version, given the publisher’s focus on PC gaming in general. Oh well, the month got back on track with Capcom announcing a PC version (among others) of Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection on the 15 th, and that was followed by the announcement of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles for PC, Switch and PlayStation 4 on the 21 st. The fourth month of the year got off to a pretty poor start with Square Enix’s NEO: The World Ends with You announcing a PC port… as yet another Epic Games Store exclusive.

As such, I’ve decided to list ten such ports that I find absolutely fascinating by the very nature of their existence.īut before we get to the list itself, it’s time for me to brag (and gripe) about all the PC port-related news that’s come out since our last update back in April.

As such, there was a tendency for companies – ranging from local publishers to the original Japanese publishers themselves – to just outright license PC ports of some popular Japanese titles, just so that other parts of Asia could enjoy these games in something resembling a legitimate fashion. Unfortunately, while major North American and European markets were likely to have the same console hardware as their Japanese counterparts (at least in some form), this wasn’t necessarily the case for other parts of Asia. Since Japan’s been willing to export their games to the West since the 1980s at the very latest, it only stands to reason that they were equally willing to export their wares to other parts of Asia. Whether it was a matter of necessity – like, say, as a consequence of PCs being one of the few gaming-capable platforms that weren’t made illegal in China for roughly 15 years – or a mere matter of preference, as was the case with South Korea’s absolute obsession with StarCraft, PC gaming has managed to secure a significant foothold in Asia to this day.Īnd that foothold has led to some very strange oddities. While Japan prefers gaming in… literally every other way imaginable, the greater Asian continent has a prominent predilection towards playing on PC. To be frank, however, Japan’s an outlier when it comes to the PC market. Honestly, I’ve been sitting on this topic for a couple of years now, ever since I made a point to research various PC ports meant for the Japanese market. But for now, let’s settle with this trimester’s look into the wide wacky world of PC ports. In other words, I’ve got my work cut out for me. At this point, I think the article I had planned for last month will be slotted into this one, along with the other listicle I had in mind for this month. There’s no point in beating around the bush: July just got away from me this year.
