Nick tries to deal with a wayward horse that its owner won't keep under control, faces problems from a magistrate who resents him giving her a ticket, and investigates a case of arson at a local farm. Greengrass decides to offer his services to two elderly women, but soon regrets it when he thinks he can make money from his arrangement. As locals boycott his store, Nick is convinced something is not right, especially when someone breaks in and steals the shopkeeper's masonic items. Nick and Kate become concerned for the well-being of a local shopkeeper in the village, when rumours spread of him being improper to a group of young boys he is friends with. Blaketon hires a strict cleaner to prepare Ashfordly police station for inspection, much to Ventress and Bellamy's dislike. Kate seeks to help the Maskell family out as Alan's father stubbornly refuses to let his wife use contraception pills for the sake of her health, following her recent labour. Nick finds himself investigating reports of drunken hikers and a flasher on the moors, but while these are soon solved easily enough, he finds it hard to locate a missing man whose wife has been having an affair. Meanwhile, Kate attempts to find work from village doctor Alex Ferrenby, and soon aids Alan's mother with a premature birth. Oscar Blaketon, Nick deals with issues concerning local trouble-maker Claude Greengrass, a malicious accusation against a visiting Australian, and trouble aimed at local boy Alan Maskell.
